Urban Art: More than just Graffiti in the Wynwood Arts District of Miami
"Some people become cops because they want to make the world a better place. Some people become vandals because they want to make the world a better looking place.”
- Bansky, Wall and Piece
Without a doubt, this was the highlight of our trip to Miami. A number of people had recommended the Wynwood Business District as THE place to go if we wanted to see some awesome urban art. Some people might just look at this as graffiti and while some of the art found around the area might fit the description of "traditional" graffiti that we are all used to seeing on subway or railway cars, back alleys or on trash cans, with area codes represented and the like, it is SO much more than art.
I'm sure you've heard the term before "Art is subjective" and that really is true...beauty is found in the eye of the beholder and what one person might think is vulgar may be a beautiful expression of emotions to another. The key is to get out and explore. We started out at the Wynwood Walls and we were able to find inexpensive parking for $3 an hour within a short walking distance.
Covering 50 city blocks, the Arts District has over 200 street murals, more than 30 restaurants and 400 retailers of everything from fashion, restaurants, art galleries, and retail stores. We spent almost 3 hours walking around (it's great exercise) and for those of you who might not feel comfortable walking around an urban area that is admittedly a bit rough around the edges, or if you have mobility issues, you can take guided tours with a company like https://wynwoodartwalk.com/ and be driven around on guided tours.
Just as a heads up, I grew up in Atlanta and I know what it means to always be aware of your surroundings and seeing that I was utterly unfamiliar with this area of Miami, I just put myself back in my Atlanta safety mindset and we went on about our business walking around, taking photos and finding some really amazing art!!!
Per the website for the Wynwood Business Development District, on the second Saturday of each month, "starting at 6:00pm and extending throughout the night, this iconic monthly art event features openings at art galleries, restaurants and retail businesses." You can utilize the interactive map HERE and click on the marks to view some of the art murals.
I highly recommend you spending the afternoon there the next time you are in Miami. Step out of your comfort zone, learn more about the artists who did these amazing works of art and enjoy the multitude of different restaurant and shopping options available. You won't regret it!
